From Austria’s Niederösterreich region, Danaris Grüner Veltliner is the zippy and characterful, green apple-accented refresher we just can’t get enough of. Why? Well, you’ll have to have a glass and see for yourself.
It’s made by Winzer Krems, one of the most prominent wine co-ops in the area, which is owned collectively by upwards of 730 winegrowers. Together, this network cares for almost 3,000 acres of vines, but because its component vineyards are managed by individual growers, they receive kid-glove-level care and meticulous attention.
The grapes for this bottling were grown around the town of Krems, on the banks of the Danube (hence its name, Danaris, derived from an ancient name for the river), and were hand harvested and pressed gently to extract the most delicate flavors. And the result is an absolute delight for the senses: intense aromatics of green apple and pear lead to a pretty, pale gold palate of zesty lime and crunchy green apple carried by a slight spritz and accented by a little white pepper.
