Champagne may get most of the glory when it comes to French bubbles, but Crémant—a category of French sparklers produced via the same traditional method, outside the Champagne region—is an excellent alternative and far better value. Domaine Bouché Cuvée Le Calme is the finest cuvée from fifth generation winemaker Bruno Bouché and froths with delicious orchard fruit and mineral flavors.
The Bouchés got their start with wine way back in the early 1900s, when grandfather Abel Bouché farmed a single hectare (about two and a half acres) of grapes near Épernay, Champagne’s capital. His son Pierre was the one to start making bubbles, and his son is our pal Bruno, who packed up and took production south to Limoux.
Now, he, wife Bernadette and their three sons craft a range of classy Crémants informed by their Champenoise heritage. Made with sustainably grown Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac, this bottling is considered their Tête de Cuvée, or top wine, made with only the first pressing of grapes.
You can expect invigorating pear and citrus tones, creamy complexity and fresh, persistent bubbles. It will bring serious class, refreshment and flavor to any special celebration. Serve as an aperitif or pair it with soft cheeses, seafood, chicken, prosciutto, Asian dishes and more.
